Raphael Silvanus Haider joins COMPARE, hosted by the Canals/Lane group located in Nottingham. Starting with his Master’s thesis, Raphael worked with arrestins throughout his entire scientific career. He was introduced to the research field at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, mostly conducting confocal microscopy studies. His continuous interest in studying conformational changes to investigate the structure-function relationship of arrestins led him to become a part of the Prof. Carsten Hoffmann group while undertaking his PhD studies at the University of Jena, Germany. In this position, he further developed his confocal microscopy skills and worked extensively with GRK knockout cells to unravel the GRK and β-arrestin coupling specificity of more than a dozen clinically important GPCRs. By creating a novel set of β-arrestin1 and 2 conformational change biosensors, he additionally found that the two universal GPCR binders undergo different conformational changes for the interaction with the same GPCR. Raphael joined the labs in Nottingham at the beginning of March 2023, funded by the German Research Foundation, yet due to the successful acquisition of a Nottingham Research Fellowship, he joined the SoLS as staff in November as a research fellow.
