Title:
Intervention to increase the fraction of female students who lead group projects within Physics
Project Outcomes:
Physics, in common with other STEM disciplines has a ‘leaky’ pipeline for female career progression, and it became apparent that fewer females were leading undergraduate group projects than would statistically be anticipated.
Equality and diversity training was provided for all undergraduates prior to the leadership selection process, and a joint one-day course focused on leadership and assertiveness was targeted at female undergraduates and early year postgraduates. In addition to providing training, the joint workshop also afforded useful cross-university networking opportunities for the students, and it is likely that similar events will be run in the future.
